Sampo Pank and Nordea Bank to enhance security of ATMs

22.08.2008

In August Sampo Pank and Nordea Bank will install on their joint ATMs anti-skimming equipment that will protect ATM users from having their bank card data copied and PINs stolen.

“The aim of installing new equipment is to enhance the security of clients in making transactions in ATMs and prevent card data from being copied and PINs stolen,” explained Ainar Nurk, Director of banking cards arm of Sampo Pank, the importance of the project. “As the trend of stealing card data is growing worldwide, by means of anti-skimming equipment we have to ensure the cardholders’ confidence and security while using the bank services.”

According to Margus Aun, Director of banking cards arm of Nordea Bank, enhancing security of ATMs by means of anti-skimming equipment is only a natural part of the banks’ product development. “Although until today only single cases of copying card data have been committed in Estonia, we have to anticipate security issues and keep up with technological developments,” said Aun.

During the first stage banks will install on external ATMs anti-skimming equipment that disables the option of copying card data from the magnetic strip of a card and stealing PINs. The ATMs supplied with new equipment are provided with a cover over the PIN keyboards and an anti-skimming device in front of the card slit. The aim of the first one is to ensure that no third persons get hold of a client’s PIN and the second one will protect card data against copying.

The ATM network of Sampo Pank and Nordea Bank is managed all over the Baltics by the international service provider First Data. In total, Sampo Pank and Nordea Bank have 215 ATMs all over the Baltics, incl. 79 ATMs in Estonia.
